Learn more about the sw cane side table

Inspired by the skill and speed of Indian craftswomen who produce cane products in village craft communities, designers Utharaa L Zacharias and Palaash Chaudhary learnt and brought the technique to their studio where they hand-weave cane tops themselves, in tribute and admiration to traditional handicrafts. Each cane top for the cane side tables takes about 36 hours of weaving, poetically bridging a slow and intricate, age-old craft with the industrial process of the fabricated steel frame.

The sw cane side table is part of the summer-winter or sw collection by soft-geometry that explores product personalities and the material choices that define them. The three piece collection includes a coffee table, end table and accent chair, built in minimalist steel frames and dressed with tops in different materials that employ diverse techniques & processes.

The hand-woven cane lattice tops of the sw cane side tables are a complete contrast to the sleek flat color tops of the metal side tables, both of which dress the same metal frame. In creating these distinct personalities the collection illustrates a diversity in products that mirror the diversity of the people that use them and pose a limitless opportunity to grow into more materials, processes and personalities. In a small way, the pieces hope to inspire a rich personality culture into the realm of furniture, recognizing, emphasizing and celebrating the many identities that can be born from material qualities.
